Description: An original WW2 'TOWN PLAN' map of "PAVIA" in ITALY which has been printed on the back of a CANCELLED PHOTO MAP of CORSICA. Its history is fascinating in that both sides have connections to the Italian Military mapping service (ISTITUTO GEOGRAFICO MILITARE), with the original photo map of CORSICA entitled "S.FIORENZO" (Saint-Florent) was produced in 1943. However, due to the lack of a visible month of printing, it's uncertain whether it relates to when Italy was still aligned to Germany and therefore in occupation of the island, or after their surrender to the Allies in September 1943. (Scale 1:25,000) The later map of PAVIA was produced in April 1945, a matter of days before Allied troops entered the city. Whilst this side of the map was 'Drawn and Reproduced' by the ISTITUTO GEOGRAFICO MILITARE in April 1945, it was 'Compiled and Published' by the Allies' HQ 15 Army Group. (Scale 1:10,000) Interestingly, several diagonal crosses have been used in the survey to show the damage caused by Allied bombing, such as the Railway Station and the Ponte Coperto. An ink stamp in the margin shows that it was officially retained by ALLIED FORCES HQ, and then seemingly transferred to GHQ Middle East a few years later. It then spent decades in the military archives before being eventually disposed of. Measures 62cm x 49cm. A rare and intriguing sheet in very good overall condition, with one clean tear which has been historically repaired with a strip of brown paper (see photos). Will be shipped in a cardboard tube.
