Description: Original WW2 RAF (War) map entitled "STRAIT OF DOVER" featuring ARNHEM, NIJMEGEN, BASTOGNE, ST HUBERT, DUNKIRK, OSTEND, WALCHEREN etc This was a sheet used extensively by COASTAL COMMAND and BOMBER COMMAND for operations over the North Sea and into Continental Europe. Printed in June 1944, corresponding perfectly with OPERATION FORTITUDE SOUTH. This was part of the plan employed by the Allies in the run up to, during and after the D-DAY LANDINGS, to fool Germany into thinking the main Allied Invasion would occur on the beaches around CALAIS rather than NORMANDY. After months of leaking false intelligence and the build up of a huge phantom army, the plan had the RAF even drop fake paratroopers and radar deceiving 'window' chaff across the Channel on the morning of D-Day. The plan successfully delayed the deployment of huge numbers of available German reinforcements to combat the real invasion. So convincing was the deception, that the plan was continued throughout Operation Overlord in order to keep the Germans guessing. Scale 1:500,000 In very good condition. Will be sent as per its existing fold lines. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. (Seller's Ref - EB380)
