World War 1 American Field Service Medal, service ribbon. NO mount. Current production. Made in the USA, using foreign ribbon material. The American Field Service (1914-1917) was a volunteer ambulance corps staffed largely by college men from the United States who offered their service in support of the French Nation during World War I. It evolved from a single unit of ten vehicles to a position of importance in the French table of organization, having forty-eight units with 1,200 volunteer drivers in the field by the Fall of 1917. The American Field Service (AFS) operated light ambulances in direct support of French combat divisions, transporting wounded French soldiers from the front lines to field hospitals in the rear. Since the American Field Service Medal is not an official award of any government, it must be classified as a society or veteran's organization medal. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying.
