Description: Winslow Homer Post Office 1864 Harper's Civil War newspaper Brooklyn Sanitary Fr Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization. Issued March 5th, 1864, New York, by Harper & Brothers. An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events. Great double page centerfold image of the Brooklyn, NY Sanitary Fair. Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper.  An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue. During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era. Paper uniformly age toned as typical, long closed tear at bottom corner of front cover, old diagonal crease to lower right corner of issue, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued. Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display.  Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W. Periodical will be shipped gently rolled in a sturdy 3" wide tube to ensure it arrives safely to you! Multiple issues purchased at the same time will be shipped flat. [B11056]. A feature of this issue is the full page print by famed artist Winslow Homer: "Any Thing For Me, If You Please?--Post Office of the Brooklyn Fair in Aid of the Sanitary Commission". Other prints include a full front page: "The Escaped Refugees From the Libey Prison" with a related article inside. "Schleswig Costumes" "the Dannewerk--Semicircular Rampart Near Bustrup" "Map of the Scene of Hostilities in Schleswig..." "George Augustus Sala..."; a full page: "Reconnaissance at Morton's Ford--Night Scene". The double page centerfold has 15 vignettes of the: "Brooklyn Fair In Aid of the Sanitary Commission". This issue contains the 6th (and final) installment of "A White Hand and a Black Thumb", by Henry Spicer, originally published by Charles Dickens' in All the Year Round. The back page has a cartoon: "Waking Up a Hornet's Nest".
