Description: Wilderness Champion: The Story of a Great Hound.A classic tale of a Red Coonhound pup raised by a wolf. Does a hound's loyalty belong to the wolf that raised him and taught him survival in the wild or to the master who provided him with food, protection, and understanding? The ranger Johnny loses a red hound pup on an Alberta trail and recovers him months later. To this dog that has known only wolf life, he teaches the ways of men. Several years later a wolf pack leader appears, rousing in Reddy the irrepressible memory of his earlier life.About the AuthorJoseph Wharton Lippincott, an author and the third member of his family to head the publishing house of J. Johnny, his former owner, plots ways in which to redeem Reddy from his wild life, and gets his chance when Reddy in snared by some lawbreakers and set free by Johnny. Thanks to Reddy, Johnny gets a chance at a ranch job where Reddy's skill in the hunt is against the mountain lions. His fame spreads -- he is taken to and entered in the field trials. Eventually, Johnny and Reddy return to Aller and for a time Reddy seeks out his old wild life and his foster father, the wolf. A rugged and dramatic og story -- good adventure -- and sound background of the life in the wilds. SUCH an incredible story … This children's novel was among the most impactful of my youth. I plan to read it to my grandson. The novel is out of print. Glorious read!! … After many years, this book still has the power to make me cry at the end. Lippencott's obscure books, especially Wilderness Champion and the Wahoo Bobcat, introduced me to a world of silence, undergrowth and tracking, sunsets, and detail. The limited dialogue and exhaustive description struck a chord with me, and weaned me off regular kid's books forever. So wonderful .. This book was in my grade school library and I ATE UP books by this author. Any of the Joseph W. Lippincott books are great reads for kids.Loved it as a kid and now my son does too .. Austin recommendation. His 4th grade teacher read this aloud to the class and he loved it so much he couldn't stop talking about it. Next thing I know he borrowed it from his teacher and wanted me to read it. This one took me a while to get into. I really enjoyed the story once I got several chapters into it. Nan used to read it to us … I love redbone coonhounds which is why I sought out and read this book. Loved it. One of the best adventure books I have ever read. ….I signed this book out so many times at my public school library that when I went back searching for it at my old school twenty five years later the librarian gave it to me when she saw I was the last person to read it and because of how many times I had signed it out!!!! Five stars! … One of my all-time favourite kids-young adult books. A Redbone Hound puppy gets lost and adopted by a wolf. Kind of a dog-Tarzan story, but it read a lot better than I'm making it sound. I loved this book, and was able to find a used copy to read to my own kids. Great find A classic early twentieth century read … that provides a look into a time and place that no longer exists. Although there is the fictionalization of the thoughts and personalities of some animals the setting reflects a realistic balanced view of humans and animals in a natural habitat. This was written in a different time where men will hunt and fish for dinner without drawing outrage. Young readers are not sheltered from the likes of coyote fights or the graphic scene of a wolf killing a badger for food. A mans dog spends winter nights with a wolf on a cold mountain side and there is no social media mob demanding that he be publicly scorned for not insisting the dog come inside. A young woman is among the riders on horseback without a feminist statement because the notion that she shouldn’t be there is absent. It’s a good story about a dog, simple as that. Maybe not “the best story ever” but a good satisfying read that is an escape from current writings in which every author is compelled to “make a statement.” Add my name to the list of people who would love to read the prequel if it was available. Such fond memories …. Exactly like I remember it back in grade school! A great story, well written. Loved it as a kid …… This was a book I loved as a kid, and as soon as I received the book, I read it from cover to cover. It is still one of my favorite books. Great book, … read it when I was a kid, now my son is reading it, one of my all time favorites Five stars!! …. Read this as a child and it stayed in my memory as one of my all time favorite books. Managed to get a copy several years ago and just finished reading it to my grandchildren, a girl 7 and a boy 9 (who could have read it himself, but like the camaraderie of my reading it to him and his sister). They loved hearing about Reddy and could hardly wait for the next chapter. What a wonderful writer Joseph Wharton Lippincott was! I can't remember when a book last brought me to tears, but this one did, in a happy way. Wish there were more books really available by this author. I recommend it to boys and girls alike, and after finishing it, I knew why it had been one of my favorite children's books, and it still is, 70 years later. The BEST book in the house! … My son loved this book. I bought it for my grandsons. Books like this are great for children.Marvellous Reading!
