Description: ARTWORK OF HISTORY OF FISHING IN THE PACIFIC NORTH WEST AND ALASKA Puget Sound with large annual salmon runs harvested by fish traps and purse seiners, was an ideal place for commercial fishing. Purse seining for salmon was initiated here in the early 1880's. Eventually the skiffs became powered, and a vessel type evolved for a number of fisheries around the world, what became known as the West Coast Seiner. When gasoline engines came into use, the first West Coast seiners were created. As the boats evolved, they became larger and faster and entered other fisheries. It took the right fishermen/boatbuilders of the salmon fisheries of the Pacific North West and Alaska to do this, and the progression went into the herring fishey in the Pacific North West.
