Description: Have a look at Risen from the Ashes: The History of the West Baden Springs Hotel by Patrick J. O'Brian. This is the most recent 2023 printing of the book with over 230 pages total and more than 111 of those pages in color. The book gives a brief history on the settlement of the area before delving into how Lee Sinclair came to purchase the original hotel, and how his daughter and her husband eventually sold the hotel to Ed Ballard. From there the hotel closed a few years before the Jesuits bought it as a seminary and eventually Northwood Institute purchased it from them. For years the property fell into litigation and it looked as though the hotel might collapse until some local benefactors saved it from destruction. Each book comes brand new and signed by the author. Select shops carry this book in the Orange County hotels, along with the museum, but they won't come signed and you can save by purchasing a copy here. Suggested reading is the companion book Pluto in the Valley: The History of the French Lick Springs Hotel that covers another historic hotel a mile down the road, also saved from the brink of destruction. This edition has more real photos than previous editions. Some of the postcard images have been replaced where applicable, making this book better than ever.
