The book is a milestone toward a scientific approach to understanding of human sexuality. The researchers employed first-hand interviewers and gathered data from 8000 females during a twenty year period. The text describes the methods of sampling, coding, interviewing and the statistical data. From its inception in 1938, the project had the staunch and generous support of the administration, including Dr. Herman B. Wells, President of Indiana University, the ROCKFELLER FOUNDATION, and the National Research Council's Committee for Research on Problems of Sex. The Kinsey team gathered information from groups---based on education level, those confined to penal institutions, college dormitories, homosexual groups, and geographical locations. Individuals were asked about the age of their first "orgasm" and the frequency and whether this was from masturbation, with another another female or a man. The Kinsey researchers learned that women often begin masturbation before puberty and that many women have strong sexual urges but they often attempt to suppress these desires because of societal conditioning and religious oppression. Women were surveyed about whether their orgasms were with heterosexual or homosexual partners.
