Description: WASHINGTON IRVING - THE ALHAMBRA; Belford Clarke & Co.; Chicago; 1884; "Caxton Edition"."Reprinted from the original edition". Lovely boards and spine as was typical of the Caxton Editions. Toning to spine - title and author somewhat faded.Boards very good, binding solid, pages unmarked with age appropriate toning. A touching inscription opposite title page "Emma S Morrison, in memory of her darling boy, Bertie". Belford & Clarke were a prolific and successful reprint house, often infuriating their larger publishing competitors by putting out much cheaper editions and selling books in non traditional venues - storefronts, hardware stores, department stores, etc, rather than traditional bookstores. Two noteworthy stories: they were the first house to publish the Peck Books, having purchased the rights for $1000. Also they were sued by the British publishers of Chatterbox for putting out an unauthorized US version. As to the name given to these special volumes - Caxton - I have seen no explanation. But I suspect it was derived from William Caxton (1422-1491), believed to be the first person to introduce a printing press to England and as a printer the first English retailer of printed books!
