Waking Life is a 2001 American experimental adult animated film written and directed by Richard Linklater. The film explores a wide range of philosophical issues, including the nature of reality, dreams and lucid dreams, consciousness, the meaning of life, free will, and existentialism. It is centered on a young man who wanders through a succession of dream-like realities wherein he encounters a series of individuals who engage in insightful philosophical discussions. Director Richard Linklater presents this computer-animated, dreamlike, meandering film about a college-age man (Wiley Wiggins) who floats in and out of a series of philosophical discussions and ethereal experiences, meeting an interesting cast of characters along the way. Each character that Wiley meets engages him in an existential discussion. Wiley listens, observes, and occasionally responds. Then he glumly shuffles off to his next encounter. At times, he wakes up in his bed and rubs his eyes, appearing to start a new day. But eventually viewers learn that Wiley is dreaming throughout the film, and is trying to learn to control his dreams--and accomplish lucid dreaming, or simply wake up.Visually, WAKING LIFE is nothing short of fantastic. Linklater stays true to his Indie style--jerky camera, drifting gaze, and steady head shots that allow non-actors to talk straight into the camera. To achieve the floating feeling of the dream sequences, he first tried taking aerial shots from a helicopter, then opted for the smoother effect of a hot air balloon. He shot the film on digital video, edited it, then called on 30 animators to finish it. The characters in the film move and gesticulate like live action, but they are animated with odd color schemes and surreal lines that make them cartoony caricatures. WAKING LIFE is a superb work that should be applauded for its atmospheric elements (lovely images of New York and Austin), its amusing bohemian dialogues, and its unique animation. From the director of Slacker and Dazed and Confused comes one of the most imaginative animated features ever made. This funny, ingenious film, which Rolling Stone Magazine calls "nothing short of amazing," explores the fascinating question: "Are we sleep-walking through our waking state or wake- walking through our dreams"? Join Wiley Wiggins as he searches for answers to lifes most important questions in a world that may or may not be reality in the "most visually alive movie of the year." (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times) Nominated for numerous awards, mainly for its technical achievements, Waking Life won the National Society Of Film Critics award for "Best Experimental Film", the New York Film Critics Circle award for "Best Animated Film", and the "CinemAvvenire" award at the Venice Film Festival for "Best Film". It was also nominated for the Golden Lion, the festival's main award. "Waking Life" is a fascinating and lively film that provides not only visual interest in the unusual and often beautiful animation, but also a lot of thought-provoking discussion of existence. Those who are already fans should certainly pick up Fox's DVD edition, which provides a terrific presentation of the film, along with a lot of extras. A visionary animated film of deep play that is stylistically innovative and spiritually rich in content. REVIEWS: "Waking Life's inventive animated aesthetic adds a distinctive visual component to a film that could easily have rested on its smart screenplay and talented ensemble cast." - Rotten Tomatoes "A" rating, calling it "a work of cinematic art in which form and structure pursue the logic-defying (parallel) subjects of dreaming and moviegoing," - Entertainment Weekly "so verbally dexterous and visually innovative that you can't absorb it unless you have all your wits about you" - The New Yorker SPECIAL FEATURES: Commentary: There are three commentaries included on the disc - one text-based, while the other two are audio commentaries from the filmmakers. The audio commentaries include director Richard Linklater, animator director Bob Sabistan, actor Wiley Wiggins and producer Tommy Pallotta on the first track and over 25 of the film's animators on the second track. There is also an additional subtitle fact track that provides some pretty informative comments on the on-screen events throughout. The Linklater-lead track provides a relaxed and informative discussion of the making of both the live-action picture (done with two light-weight digital cameras) and the animation process. In addition, there's also some fun little stories about the film and some discussion and jokes about the inspirations for the film. The animators provide a fun track of their own, chatting about their approach to the particular scene they worked onSelected Takes of The Live Action Version: These are clips from the live-action film that was done before animation of the scenes began. While it's fascinating to see this digital video footage, it would have been really nice if multi-angle was used to be able to easily go back and forth to compare the animated and live-action material.(12:00)Animation Software Tutorial: Animator Bob Sabiston provides a look at the software that he developed to bring the animation of "Waking Life" to life. The animator shows the process of taking the live-action footage that's on the computer and using the rotoscope process to cover it with layers of animation. (20:21)EPK: While an "Electronic Press Kit" featurette doesn't exactly sound promising, this is actually a very informative and interesting little piece that provides a lot of interesting information about the animation and live-action production process while also comparing a few of the live-action/animation scenes. Interviews with animation director Bob Sabiston and director Richard Linklater, among others, are included. While this featurette is only about 4 1/2 minutes, it's very to-the-point and packs a solid amount of info within a limited time.19 Deleted Animated ScenesAnimation Scrap Heap: This is a section that provides 19 small bits that were not used in the final film: some are simply alternate versions, some are deleted scenes, some are tests and some are rough versions. Early Animation Tests (2:48)The director's animated short "Snack and Drink" along with the "First Pass" animation tests. (3:40) Shorts by Bob SabistonTrailers: A trailer for both "Waking Life" and the upcoming Goldie Hawn/Susan Sarandon ex-groupie comedy "The Banger Sisters" are included.---------------------------------------------------------I Heart Huckabees (DVD) (2004)Writer/Director: David O. Russell Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Jason Schwartzman, Isabelle Huppert Run Time:1 hour and 47 minutes Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin lead an all-star cast including Jude Law, Naomi Watts and Mark Walhberg in this outrageous comedy from director/co-writer David O. All the while, a sexy, French author (Isabelle Huppert) is trying to throw a wrench in their plan by seducing Albert's mind and body. Intelligent and offbeat philosophical comedy from the director of 'Three Kings'.
