The back bottom is etched with the manufacturer. This piece measures approximately 7” tall and the oval base is about 6 3/8” long 3 3/8” wide. The piece has some blemishes that have happened over time. I took close ups of a few the flaws in the pictures for your reference, for example her nose and a mark on her chest. Still a beautiful piece. 🦋🦋 History of the Pieta The Pieta is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created by the renowned Italian artist, Michelangelo. This iconic sculpture depicts the body of Jesus Christ in the arms of his grieving mother, Mary, after his crucifixion. Michelangelo began working on the Pieta in 1498 when he was only 24 years old. The sculpture was commissioned by a French cardinal, Jean de Bilhères, for his tomb in the Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Michelangelo worked on the sculpture for two years, meticulously carving it from a single block of marble. The Pieta is known for its perfect harmony, delicate proportions, and realistic details. Michelangelo achieved a remarkable level of emotional expression through the sculptural techniques he employed. Mary’s youthful face conveys deep sorrow and resignation, while Jesus’ body displays a profound sense of calmness and serenity. The sculpture was unveiled in 1500 and immediately received critical acclaim for its artistic brilliance. It quickly became one of the most famous works of art in the world and solidified Michelangelo’s reputation as a master sculptor. Over the centuries, the Pieta has been moved several times within the Vatican, and it is now housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, specifically the first chapel on the right as you enter the church. The sculpture is protected behind a bulletproof glass enclosure to prevent any damage or vandalism. The Pieta’s enduring beauty and significance have made it an enduring symbol of grief, compassion, and the bond between a mother and her child. It continues to inspire awe and admiration among art enthusiasts and pilgrims alike who visit St. Peter’s Basilica. 🦋🦋🦋 We purchase our items from private collections, estate sales, flea markets, swap meets and of course antique shops!
