Description: Description: This Vintage Vinegar Valentine Titled "Traffic Cop" has a Cop Blowing a Whistle.Vinegar Valentines were all the rage back in the early 1800's. Picture yourself, if you will, sitting at home amusing yourself with some activity like reading or sewing by candlelight. You are 21 years old and already run your prime, no future for a spinster like yourself. The post master arrives with a card and you eagerly pay your hard earned penny to get your mail, in those days, the sender did not pay postage, the receiver did. You open a card from an anonymous someone on this day of Love only to find a crude drawing on cheap paper, with little to no embellishments and definitely no bells or whistles ... a quick glance of your eyes and you see even the words are mean spirited. To think, you paid to receive this insulting card. And that is what a vinegar valentine is, an insulting, crude or rude card, thought they resembled a post card more than a greeting card. The paper used was cheap quality and flimsy, they were simple and clearly little effort was put into them, the poems of what should have been love or friendship, were rude words about their employment or features. To many they were horrible and cruel, to others, they were worthy of a laugh. While mostly geared at women, men did not escape and they too were poked and made fun of. Eventually post masters had to start seizing them, as they were being sent anonymously and it was unfair to the receiver who was paying for them ... a little salt for the insult.Measures 7" W x 10" H.Condition: Corners and edges are worn.
