Description: Offered for your consideration is a vintage REALITE by Autopoint propelling pencil, USA-manufactured c.1940. REALITE was a competitor of Autopoint in the early 1920’s, ended up acquiring them, and then used the Autopoint name for the new, larger company. REALITE pencils were made of Redmanol, an early trade name for Bakelite, while the Autopoint and prior EVERSHARP (both Charles Keeran inventions) had plated metal barrels. After the merger, the new Autopoint pencils rolled off the line in Redmanol, which was soon made in several colors; a first for the mass-market mechanical pencil industry! Sometime in the mid 1930’s, the REALITE name was resurrected as a secondary Autopoint product line. This pencil is the second variant of that line, sporting a straight clip instead of the earlier ball-end type. What’s more, this pencil bears a promotion for KOPPERS Chicago COKE “More Heat Less Cost.” KOPPERS was a big client of Autopoint in this era. They produced massive, top-grade industrial equipment for super-heating coal to shed its by-products for other uses, leaving coke, a dense, glassy solid fuel source that was widely-used back then. Practically unknown today, that coal-derived fuel’s name precedes Coca-Cola’s nickname by decades. So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this terrific REALITE ad pencil should be yours. This REALITE pencil is in clean, very good condition. It measures 5⅛” long by ⅜” thick. There are no cracks or noteworthy scratches on the scale-patterned, black/brown/gold mottled plastic barrel, just some expected use and storage marks from the years. Also, the eraser cap has a crack, but it doesn't affect the fit and isn't very noticeable. And the plated steel clip has some oxidation but rests correctly on the barrel with no gap. Plus, the KOPPERS promo imprint is strong, but some of the white enamel has worn away, as pictured. Overall, this Pre-War pencil presents quite nicely. Most importantly, this REALITE pencil works correctly. It uses .046” (1.1mm) lead in its simple and dependable spiral mechanism. Rotation of the writing cone extends the lead and retraction, when needed, is accomplished by a gentle upward push. Plus, the original eraser is present but is likely too stiff to be effective and should be replaced. And, there’s a small supply of leads underneath the eraser cradle as typical. Lastly, this pencil is well-balanced with good mass and feels great on paper, especially with the large, soft lead of yesteryear that many of us still prefer! So, as pictured and described, this REALITE by Autopoint KOPPERS COKE ad pencil is offered at a competitive price.
