Description: This is a fine example of a Goodell Pratt model number 2510 10”sweep bit brace. It is a super heavy duty extra robust bit brace and is considered to be the best bit brace’s Goodall Pratt had to offer. Expensive when introduced in 1926 so was not a best seller leading up to the Great Depression which was its demise. The very unique and strong ratchet mechanism was patented by Sept 16 1924 by Fred Farley. The patent number is 1,508,512, see photo of actual patent info. It has a fully boxed ratcheting mechanism with the reversing control being a ring on the top of the ratchet housing. It works very nicely. The brace has other premium features like Bolivian Rosewood Handles, steel clad roller bearing head, a sweep handle that runs on adjustable steel collars and a universal chuck with Lloyd Miller double spring jaws. The universal chuck and jaws allow the use of all types of bit shafts, not just the vintage square tapered but also round and hex shank bits. This brace was made between 1926 and 1929 nearly 100 years ago and will last beyond another lifetime with normal maintenance. Gently cleaned and lubricated, it looks and works great. The joints at the head and the chuck ratchet is tight and firm, no excess play. Ratchet casing has old owners stamp, see photos. Fine collectible user in very good working condition. One of my hobbies has been woodworking, but never had the time to do it as well as would like. A few years ago I became passionate about using vintage hand tools vs. battery or electric powered whenever it made sense to do so. Today my passion still thrives and I enjoy properly oiling/waxing, cleaning or refurbishing, if needed those same vintage woodworking tools. My goal is to place as many of these high quality, made in the USA vintage hand tools back into the hands of today’s craftsmen. I would never “part out” a good tool just for the proceeds. If the tool I have acquired is serviceable I will put it into as good of condition it can be and sell to friends or on eBay. All I am trying to do is receive some compensation for my time and retain enough capital to be able to purchase more tools, some in need of gentle care.
