Description: This Lichten Ware puppy named "HANSEL" was finished with glossy brown and white glazes with darker glazes on the nose, mouth, and eyes. She is about 6.5 inches long, 4 inches tall, and 3.75 inches wide. The bottom has the hand-incised "Lichten Ware" and "Hansel". She is in very good vintage condition - over 60 years old - no chips or hairlines. Artist-illustrator Esther Friend and her husband, Carl Lichtenstein, took lessons at Hull House in Chicago in 1939 and started a business making ceramic figurines and Christmas ornaments. These pieces - called Lichten Ware - were sold all over the country in the 1940's-60's. Their numerous animal figures often had their names etched in the bottom.
