Description: VINTAGE FRIDL BLUMENTHAL 44 ANTELOPE PIN STERLING SILVER - SIGNED. VINTAGE FRIDL BLUMENTHAL #44 - ANTELOPE PIN STERLING SILVER - SIGNED. A pin handmade by a well known modernist jewelry maker, Fridl Blumenthal Grand Dame of Metalwork was born in Berlin in 1905 and died in 1998. Fridl worked in the mid to late 1900's . This piece has an abstract antelope and the image is done in intaglio. The pin measures 2"inchesx1" Weight 17.4grams Marked Sterling , and FRIDL - with her logo The pin was made from the 1950s Pin clasp works and has not been polished. As a child FRIDL was always clever with her hands, loved visiting the then world class Berlin Zoo and modeling the animals in plasticene. She studied briefly with a young Berlin sculptor, Peter Fingestein, now an art historian, esthetician and head of the art and music department at Pace College, New York, as well as a multi-media artist. From snipping and joining copper wire, she progressed swiftly to silver, learning a lot from a Chicago silversmith, Anna Halasi, who worked in her kitchen, rather less from classes at the Art Institute. And of course, at every point, Bernhard, a top ranking metallurgist, was a great help. From the beginning, she wanted her work to be "both timeless and modern." The most cursory review of her work shows that from the beginning she succeeded. When she was a child, Fridl Blumenthal loved making things with her hands, but her mother---a craftswoman herself---discouraged her daughter from becoming a "starving" artist. She and her husband fled Nazi Germany for the United States, where Fridl began making jewelry at home. A number of galleries were eager for her work, and soon the artist had more commissions than she could handle. To slow demand, Fridl began working exclusively in gold, and continued to do so for the remainder of her career. Great addition to your collection
