Description: Vintage Charlie McCarthy Ventriloquist Doll The vintage Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist dummy was created by Edgar Bergen. He was an American actor, comedian, and radio performer who was famous for his ventriloquist act with Charlie McCarthy. Bergen taught himself ventriloquism at the age of 11 and later studied it with the famous Harry Lester. Charlie McCarthy was the first dummy created by Bergen in 1922, and he later dressed him in his signature tuxedo, monocle, and top hat for a performance at the Rainbow Room of the Hotel Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Bergen and McCarthy’s ventriloquist act was a remarkable success, and they starred in a series of top-rated radio programs from 1937 to 1956. Bergen was also a popular film star, making 14 motion pictures with Charlie and receiving a special Academy Award in 1938. The original Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist dummy used by Edgar Bergen is now on display at the National Museum of American History. As you can see, Charlie has a chip on his nose and scratches/small chips on his head, but he is in good condition. This isn't a monocle for this doll. This item belonged to my father. He had this a very long time, so it is very old.
