Description: Vintage African Senufo Kpeliye'e Hand Carved Wood Face Mask 16" Tall. The Senufo of the northern Cote d'lvoire, Africa, created a rich variety of masks associated with Poro, a society guided by a female ancestral spirit known as "the Ancient Mother." Britannica notes that the masks such as the one offered here exhibit iconography depicting a wide range of animals related to the origin of the world, important legends, and to the role of animals in carrying out obligations to ancestors and nature spirits. The term kpeliye'e, or "face of the jumping performer," refers to the dynamic performances assocated with the masks. This particular mask probably was carved in the latter half of the twentieth century. It measures 16" long, 7.25" wide, and 3" thick. The tips of both antelope horns have been broken and there is a missing edge on the back (see photos) but neither diminish the appearance of the mask on the wall.
