There are certain things that continue to separate the United States from Europe and Latin America. One is the metric system; another is soccer. Even though the term "soccer mom" has become part of American slang, soccer still takes a back seat to other sports in the U.S.; in Europe and Latin America, however, soccer is the top sport -- period. From Buenos Aires to Glasgow, soccer reigns supreme. This compilation, which Fonovisa assembled in 2002, celebrates Mexico's obsession with soccer and its participation in the 2002 World Cup (an event that is as important to soccer addicts as the World Series is to North American baseball fans). In fact, "sí se puede" is a slogan that Mexican soccer fans chant at games; it is Spanish for "Yes, we can do it." Although this Mexican-oriented collection is diverse, the thing that ties all of the material together is a festive spirit. Sports-themed compilations call for exuberance, and exuberance prevails whether Sí Se Puede gets into a Tex-Mex ranchero/norteño groove on los Rieleros Del Norte's "México Está de Fiesta" and Polo Urías' "Arriba, Arriba El Mundial" or more of a '60s rock & roll/son vibe on Conjunto Primavera's "México Ra, Ra, Ra." The latter is basically rock & roll with a Latin influence -- it has that "Hang on Sloopy"/"Louie Louie"/"Twist and Shout" type of appeal, but with Mexican soccer references and Spanish lyrics. Arguably, Sí Se Puede is to Mexican soccer fans what Tommy Boy's Jock Rock compilations were to American baseball, football, and basketball fans in the '90s. However, one doesn't have to be heavily into soccer or any other sport to appreciate this CD. Whether or not one is a soccer fan, Sí Se Puede is an infectious, enjoyably diverse album of Mexican party music. ~ Alex Henderson About InnerSleeve We offer unbeatable prices, quick shipping times and a wide selection of vinyl.
