Rolls up for compact transport, but when rolled out, simply open the valve, inner foam baffles usually "automatically" draw in more air to provide additional thickness and thermal barrier. NOT a big air mattress or a traditional foam mat , these use foam inside an outer liner that helps hold in the air, so average 1/2" thick. - IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTE: USED - Fair to Good Condition. Battle tested military surplus. Because these are military surplus - used, the foam does not have the brand new elasticity that fills with as much air as when new, but they still will work and provide foam padded comfort off the cold ground. May have holes, dirt/dust, markings, etc... Some people think the mats need to hold airtight, or think they need to blow them up. These mats are not just an air mattress or foam mattress, these use foam with an outer layer to help hold air, so are 1/2 - 1" thick without weight applied (average 1/2-3/4"). Brand new they would only be 1" thick max. While traditional foam mats are a fixed thickness, usually less: 1/4 - 1/2", and air mattresses rely solely on air to be inflated and will go completely flat with a hole, these will never go all "flat" because of the foam and air that naturally stays in the mat. - -USED - Battle tested.
