Description: Tylecodon paniculatus ‘Cape Point’ Listing is for the plant in first couple photos, last photos are of mother plants to show genetics. This plant is beginning to have some nice secondary branching. Shown in a 2g pot. Shipped bare root. This plant is just breaking dormancy as of 10/31/24. THESE PLANTS MAY BE DORMANT AND LEAFLESS IF PURCHASED BETWEEN MAY AND NOVEMBER. This will not affect the health of your plant. This cultivar of Tylecodon paniculatus is almost never seen in cultivation. It comes from the southern tip of South Africa. It is typified by a gnarlier trunk, more branching, more leaves that are smaller, and being easier to grow in Central and Northern California (much more tolerant of cold wet weather than the typical northern form). It also retains its leaves through most of summer, maybe even all if you watered it carefully. I grow this plant outdoors in SSZ 16/17, but have also seen it growing outdoors up north as far as Mendicino. I’m sure it would do well in SSZ 14&15, 19-24. This plant even does well planted in the ground for me, even if the soil is just average loamy soil. It grows much faster in the ground or in raised beds. It really is one of the easiest caudiciforms, which are notoriously temperamental. I have never lost one to rot, even with wet temps down around 27F. The showy summer blooming flowers are burnt orange.
