Description: THREE ORIGINAL 1899 LITHOGRAPHS OF DRAWINGS BY HAROLD SPEED (British, 1872-1957) "A STUDY FOR APRIL" IN SANGUINE + 2 OTHER FEMALE PORTRAIT HEADS Speed is often described as one of the "second wave" of Pre-Raphaelite artists at the end of the nineteenth and early years of the twentieth century. (See a snapshot of his accomplished career in my final photo.) All published in "The Studio" magazine, 1899. On the study for April in sanguine, the all-important "Studio" blindstamp is in the bottom right corner. The other two studies, one from graphite, one from charcoal do not have the blindstamp but each is captioned at the bottom. Unsigned, but the captions and tissue-guard (included in the sale of "April") gives a cast-iron solid attribution to Speed. Size of the sheet area is approx. 28 x 20 centimetres. Printed on wove art paper. "April" is blank to reverse; the other 2 are printed back-to-back Condition is very good - no issues at all. Very attractively printed. "The Studio" magazine was a lavishly produced and prestigious showcase for artists in the 1890's to promote their graphic work, they would submit their drawings etc. to be lithographed in the ground-breaking style of "The Studio"s accomplished lithographers such as Thomas Robert Way and William Griggs. Artists of the calibre of Beardsley, Whistler, Waterhouse, Pennell, Vallotton, Knopff etc. etc. used it as a medium for bringing their work to an informed readership. The editors would also commission works from artists, meaning that they would not be published anywhere else. The print run of the magazine was about 3,000, and subscribers included many institutions and galleries both in the UK and further afield. Under the editorship of Charles Holme, it always tried to keep a balance between the work of established artists and new emerging talent, and to promote the "avant-garde" .
