Odd unusual African / Liberian currency. Known as "Kissi Penny", "Ghizzi Penny", and “Khizzi Penny". These are genuine money used from the 1700’s through the 1900’s. These have been used as a bride price, and as money in general. They have been referred to as a “soul coin", and were believed to contain a soul. If damaged they were believed to lose the soul and required repair by a blacksmith to renew the escaped soul. At one point, male suitors placed these on the head of a woman and if the woman accepted, the khissi was seen as a down payment toward a bride price. These are mostly black, uncleaned and some have minimal dirt and minimal age related rust. They range in size from 14 - 16” long. These are no longer used as currency. Be healthy and happy!
