Description: This is the limited Lausanne edition (this set is #681 of 1000) 12 volume set of “The Works of Edward Gibbon, The History of Rome” (On the inside it’s also called “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”) by Fred de Fau & Company publishers, 1906. There are 3 other related volumes that come with this set: “Personal Letters; Misc. Writings; and Autobiography”. I received these classics with every individual volume wrapped in 1955 newspaper and carefully packed in a wooden crate. In other words it’s been very protected for the last 70 years. The only thing I’ve found a little uncomfortable about these books is the red lettering on the tan title sticker blends in and is somewhat difficult to read. Whether the books were made this way or if there has been some fading of the red ink I’m not sure. The name itself (Edward Gibbon) is there, and readable with a little work and the right light. Otherwise besides a few very minor flaws expected in a 118 year old book set, it is in excellent condition. Each volume is complete, solid and very clean. No writing, highlighting or markings of any kind. The top page edges are gilded gold, the other two are rough cut (adding to the charm). This set is very readable and would make a nice addition to any collection.
