Description: In the 1930s-40s, Books, Inc. published snazzy hardcover editions of famous mysteries and suspense tales. New titles were added monthly. The books were not much larger than the usual mass-market paperback, but they boasted arresting dust jackets designed by accomplished illustrators. Best of all, they were "offered at a popular price" — somewhere around 49 cents! This is the 1944 Books, Inc. first edition of the Oscar Wilde classic, in the original dust jacket, with protective cover. The illustration shows the morally compromised Dorian, youthful and handsome, while the grotesque image of him that is shown on the painting emerges from the smoke of his cigarette. No ISBN. The book measures 5 1/4 by 7 3/4 inches; 220 pages. The dust jacket warns the reader of “A life with great possibilities that ends in sin, disaster and tragedy. The boards are black and the lettering on the spine is in gilt. The dust jacket is entire, but there are small tears at the folds that can be seen in the photos.
