Description: THE LANCET; August 5, 1905. Earnest Henry Starling. The Croonian Lectures. The Chemical Correlation of the Functions of the Body. Lectures 1-4 contained in four separate issues of the Lancet. All 4 issues are included in this auction. First in print mention of the word “Hormone”. From Garrison Morton listing #1122 "Starling constructed a general scheme of the "hormones" as he named the internal secretions. This is the first appearance of this word, which was suggested by W.B. Hardy. In circulatory physiology the Starling legacy is conceptually one of the most influential in the twentieth century. His contributions to a modern understanding of body functions, especially the "Starling Sequence", embracing both central circulatory function and fluid exchange at the capillary level was and remains the unifying theme of contemporary circulatory theory". There is creasing, some edge damage, staples are rusted and in 3rd issue they have separated from the body. Please see photos as they are an integral part of this listings’ description.
