While traveling in Tibet, Lama Govinda began personal notebooks on the I Ching, as he found it in the Tibetan tradition. His interest in the I Ching continued, and he brought to this first-hand study of the Oriental systems, his own heritage of Western scholarship. But above all, he sought to understand the trigrams and hexagrams directly, that is, without depending on the voluminous commentaries. The core of this book is the diagrams. In them, Lama Govinda combines intuition and art with his highly analytical and mathematical approach to the signs. It was through these clear visual representations of the Houses that he came upon the evidence for correcting the order of the historiacally misplaced hexagrams. These same diagrams also point to a resolution of the problems between the King Wen and Fu Hi versions of the I Ching. Some of the visual work preserves Lama's old, delicate, original drawings. In an afterword, he shows the relationship of the I Ching to Buddhism.
