Description: Up for sale is a RARE copy of THE BOOK OF SPORTS - H.C. Peck & Theo. Bliss - Philadelphia. Ca 1855. Early Reference to Football. 191 pages - Woodcut illustrations. The Book of Sports is very rare! While it provides the rules to various outdoor children's sports, it is the very early reference to football which distinguishes it today. Also of significan interest are two sections back to back one on Cricket and the other entitled bat and ball. Some of the other sections are BLIND-MAN'S BLUFF, GYMNASTICS, VAULTING, THE PLANK, SWIMMING, STRIKING OUT, THE ROPE, DIVING, THE CRAMP, and much, much more! The book is small and measures approximately 2 1/2" x 3 1/4". Overall it is in Fair Condition. The gilt stamped cloth covered boards have some wear, with stains, tears and fading of the gilt. The back board is a little loose at the top. The cloth is wrinkled at the spine. There is scuffing along the edges and the corners are bumped and torn. There is age related browning and toning to the pages. Some spotting and stains on the pages - as well as foxing on a few pages, as well. Tears on a few pages. The corners are creased. Writing by a previous owner - including her signature - on the front end pages. Chips/nicks on the edges of some of the pages. Page #16 (TOPS) - is torn and only still connected at the very top. The frontispiece is only still connected at the top of the book, as well. The last 15 pages are a little loose at the top strong binding.
