Description: The Big Sleep STATED FIRST EDITION First Edition / First Printing By Raymond Chandler Hardcover with *Facsimile* (Reproduction) Dust Jacket This highly collectible book — Chandler’s first, arguably his best, his most famous, and the basis for the classic Bogie and Bacall movie — is in fair condition but for the front free endpaper having been cleanly removed (and the date “12/39” handwritten in very small text at the bottom stub left of the FFEP); moderate shelfwear including some surface wear-through to the bottom corners of the boards, the bottom edges of the spine, and the side edges where the boards meet the spine; some soiling to the boards and to some interior pages (most notably, to pp. 12-13, 44-45, 96-97, and 245), a publisher’s small gluing defect to pp. 8-9 where the pages meet the spine, bumping to the corners and spine ends, and a number of formerly dogeared pages which have been straightened without any breaking off of the paper (pp. 15, 19, 21, 25, 31, 45, 47, 51, 57, 75, 91, 97, 99, 101, 111, 113, 119, 131, 137, 159, 161, 167, 169 (page was folded in half), 173, 181 (top and bottom corners), 183, 191, 193, 195, 197, 199, 205, 217, 245, 267); some toning to the pastedown endpapers and light and even age toning to the interior pages; hard opening/slight loosening between page gatherings at pages 24-25, 40-41, 56-57, and 72-73; small tears of 1/2” to pp. 67, 139, 200, 221, 231, 265; and a small chip to the bottom of p. 129. Please see numerous photographs as to condition, including representative photographs of flaws. The dust jacket is a new facsimile (reproduction) dust jacket and is enclosed in a removable archival mylar protector. The book presents nicely in this facsimile jacket and looks great on the shelf.
