Description: Teaching Activities for Autistic Children: Individualized Assessment and Treatme Teaching Activities for Autistic Children: Individualized Assessment and Treatment for Autistic and Developmentally Disabled Children 1st Edition by Eric Schopler (Author), Margaret Lansing (Author), Leslie Waters (Author) Editorial Review The purpose of this volume is to make available to teachers, parents, and others our experience with tailoring teaching activities for use with autistic and similar children in their own homes, schools, and community environments. From more than 3,000 such teaching activities used in our program for the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (Division TEACCH) since it began in 1966, we have selected 296 sample activities that illustrate teaching activ- ities in 10 function areas at various levels of preadolescent development. These activities are to be used as a resource file in which the reader can find new ideas and confirmation on what and how to teach. Because autistic and similar chil- dren are characterized by uneven and widely different skills, deficits, and behavioral problems, it is necessary to develop individual teaching goals. This resource file pro- vides examples of how to implement previously formed curriculum goals. Each activity appears in the form it was originally written for an individual child by one of our TEACCH staff in collaboration with the child's parents. The reader will note references to the child's special interests and behaviors throughout the text and can therefore decide how well an activity would suit his or her particular child and what aspects might need to be changed. The activities were used in home teaching, classroom teaching, or, in some cases, both at home and at school. The TEACCH program has emphasized the collaboration between parents and teachers in the si- multaneous teaching of new skills in the child's total environment. Over the years, TEACCH has originated procedures for the assessment and devel- opment of individualized teaching programs for this frequently misunderstood pop- ulation of children. This teaching process includes three basic steps: 1. A developmental assessment is made of the child's skills and deficits in various areas of learning function. 2. On the basis of this assessment, teaching strategies are determined in order to achieve both short-term objectives and long-range teaching goals. 3. These objectives are implemented with individualized educational programs and specific teaching activities. These three steps correspond to the three Volumes of this series: Individualized Assessment and Treatment for Autistic and Developmentally Disabled Children. The first volume, The Psychoeducational Profile (PEP) (Schopler and Reichler, 1979), was developed because autistic children were traditionally considered "un- testable." By forming the PEP test items from teaching activities we had used effec- tively with autistic children, we found that virtually all such children could be tested successfully (Schopler and Reichler, 1971b). The PEP generates a profile of the child's skills and learning problems that graphically represents his or her uneven mental development. The profile includes seven main areas of learning function: 1) imitation; 2) perception; 3) gross motor; 4) fine motor; 5) eye-hand integration; 6) cognitive performance; and 7) cognitive verbal. The profile reflects not only those skills that the child has already acquired but also indicates those areas in which the child's skills are still developing. These partially acquired or "emerging" skills form the basis for each child's individualized teaching program. The process by which assessment data are translated into an educational program is explained in the second volume of the series, Teaching Strategies for Parents and Professionals (Schopler, Reichler, and Lansing, 1980).
