ANTAL DORATI conducts DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAKenneth Jewell Chorale / Ryszard Karczykowski (tenor) Szymanowski's Third Symphony, which opens this recording, is in essence a Polish choral symphony whose text is taking from a poem by the Persian mystic Jalai'al-Din Rumi called "The Song Of The Night"; as a result the symphony takes its name from it (though it is not to be confused with the similarly titled Seventh Symphony of Mahler). It is a very mysterious piece, with sizeable orchestration. Polish-born tenor Ryszard Karczykowski is featured in this work, along with the Kenneth Jewell Chorale. The Second Symphony, though only in two movements and lasting 29 minutes in length, is nevertheless a fairly bold piece, displaying the influences of Richard Strauss, especially the tone poems; and it has a fairly prominent solo violin part in it at the start, which may make the listener mistakenly believe that it's a violin concerto (he wrote two works of that kind). In the meantime, Bartok's "Two Pictures" is a work that, while it does show the impressionistic influences of French composers like Debussy and Ravel, it primarily owes a great deal to the folk music of the composer's native Hungary. Composed by Bartok in 1910, when he was 28 years old, it shows him already morphing into one of the great composers of the 20th century. Both Bartok and Syzmanowski have a great interpreter in Dorati (who was an actual student of Bartok's back in Hungary); and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is as good at such challenging Eastern European material as they were twenty years before with French material under Paul Paray, and would be with many other composers later under both Neeme Jarvi and, more recently, Leonard Slatkin. This recording is certainly one recording to own for anyone interested in 20th century music from what had once been the Soviet-ruled Iron Curtain. *** Please be advised that the USPS is providing slower delivery service for the foreseeable future, so delays are common.
