She likes music and trips into the city with her best friend at the weekend, but this is Derry 1972. A simple trip to the shops can lead to life-changing injuries or death, and staying at home can be just as dangerous when the British Troops raid house to house.Robert Sallis is a private with the Royal Fusiliers recently posted to the city. Hes repelled by how some of his fellow soldiers behave, wary too of civilian feelings running high against the occupying army. Accidentally separated from his patrol in Creggan, hes discovered by Caitlin hiding in her familys garden. He expects the worse but having seen enough violence too close to home, she doesnt give him away. Instead, she prefers to daydream about her charming boss, who has made his feelings for her plain.A Catholic girl from the Bogside and the Protestant heir to a big local employer...Caitlin believes their love can overcome the triple obstacles of politics, class, and faith in her youthful innocence. Meanwhile, Robert, newly recruited to British undercover forces, is closing in on a terrorist strike in the heart of the city centre. Author Biography I was born in Derry in the late 60s and, like many young people, I had to leave to find work elsewhere. So, at the naive age of 17, I moved to London and lived and worked there for over twenty-five years before moving to France. My husband John (born in Cork) and I finally returned home to Derry in 2017. We love living here but had forgotten how unpredictable the weather can be! I lived predominantly in London throughout the awful time that is known as The Troubles. It was apparent at the time - and still is today - that not all the facts of the horrific events that took place in Ulster - by both warring factions - were presented in an honest and unbiased way. This was especially true with the media on the UK mainland. John and I over recent years have recognised that many of the people weve been fortunate enough to meet on our travels around the world, didnt understand why or how the conflict here in the North of Ireland began and continued over a number of decades. I found this particularly frustrating and so decided Id take it upon myself to perhaps educate them and others by writing a historical fiction novel based around the events of this horrific period in our history. Ive never written anything substantial before and, me being me, decided I wouldnt write just one novel, but Id write a series! It is right for us all to try and move on from The Troubles, but in doing so, it is important to understand how and why they occurred. In any event, we must also take into account the lessons, hardships and sorrows that affected our country, individuals and others so we can continue the healing and reconciliation process. Review STONES CORNER: Turmoil (Volume 1). Order at warned! Turmoil is the first in the Stones Corner tetralogy, Darkness (September 2021), Light (February 2022) and Hope (September 2022) and a gruelling read. Its harsh but importantly truthful and objective. If you love a terrific thriller with individual stories that form an explosive ending, then this book is for you! At the same time, learn what everyday life was REALLY like in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, during those dark, harsh times from the early 1970s through to the Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1998.Amazon.co.uk Review"Set in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, Turmoil paints a vivid picture of life lived amidst armed struggle. Its a story of people trying to get on with their lives against a backdrop of discrimination, bigotry, revolutionary conflict, and state suppression. And its the little things of bravery and kindness that make this book such a joy. The uncle who buys his niece a pair of tights for her new job, knowing she cant afford them. The woman who berates the masked gunmen by telling them shell complain to their mothers. The wealthy boss who visits his injured secretary, naive to the impact his flashy car will have in her impoverished and dangerous part of town. There is universality at work here. We may be in Northern Ireland, but we could be in any country where there is conflict - where bosses are trying to save their factories, where young men are seduced into a cause, where psychopaths use conflict as cover for their own dark work, and where people - despite everything - are flirting, laughing and falling love. The author has created a set of characters here that the reader can quickly identify with, and in some cases, genuinely care about. The various sides of the conflict are represented with an even-handedness which aids our understanding of the complexities of Northern Irelands conflict. Turmoil is a confident and entertaining debut from the author whose next instalment, Darkness, is eagerly awaited...April 2021."
