Description: Welcome to Pioneer Fossils! A Certificate of Authenticity, which has a color photo on it of the exact item you purchased, will accompany the specimen. Plus a “floating” display stand. Here is a nice piece of Jurassic fossil dinosaur bone, from the world-famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. It lived about 150 million years ago, in what today is called the Morrison Formation. It is a piece of a Stegosaurus bone, measuring about 1.46" (37.3 mm) using calipers (varies). We don't know exactly what bone this was a part of, but it came from a group of Stegosaurus bones that were close together, including a full back plate, so we do know the species. Excavated in September 2020. No paint or restoration has been applied. I would suggest keeping the specimen dry, and displayed out of reach of many hands. The true genus Stegosaurus, according to Mindat, has only been found in the western US and is a very uncommon find, with a couple also in Portugal and China (see Mindat map). Stegosaurus is a member of the family Stegosauridae, which of course includes Stegosaurus, but also a number of other genus members. For example, multiple Portland Stegosaurs have been found in the UK. They are similar to Stegosaurus (same family) but they are not Stegosaurus. Stegosaurus is one of the most popular dinosaurs in the world. It was a plant eater that could grow up to 30 feet in length. It is immediately recognized by the 2 columns of large plates on its back which stood up vertically, and 4 large spikes on its tail. The spikes probably made a decent defense against predators. It probably did not outwit its enemies, as its brain (yes, it had just one brain) was about the size of a walnut. As fascinating as the Stegosaurus was and is, that is only part of the story here. The Bone Cabin Quarry got its name because of its proximity to the famed Bone Cabin. We are going to quote Wikipedia here: "Bone Cabin Quarry is a dinosaur quarry that lies approximately fifty-five miles northwest of Laramie, Wyoming near historic Como Bluff. During the summer of 1897 Walter Granger, a paleontologist from the American Museum of Natural History, came upon a hillside littered with Jurassic period dinosaur bone fragments. Nearby was a sheepherder's cabin built entirely out of fossil bones, hence the name "Bone Cabin Quarry." After Granger's discovery in late August 1897, the quarry was kept secret until the summer of 1898, when the manpower could be amassed to undertake a full-scale excavation. Bone Cabin Quarry was excavated from 1898 until 1905, when the productivity of specimens thinned. Today, qualified, licensed diggers are excavating again. The vast majority (probably 99.99% or more) of dinosaur bones never fossilized at all. They did not have the right conditions to become fossils. A tiny amount had perfect conditions, the right temperature, the right pressure, etc. And they became hard, awesome fossils. There was also a small group that had conditions good enough to harden into fossils, but not perfect, including this specimen. Which is why it is a fossil but not gembone. It is hardened, and will last many, many years if displayed and left alone. However, if you rub or scratch it, you will probably notice some tiny grains come off. And sometimes water can damage these pieces as well. This specimen appears to be one of those pieces, a nice fossil, that will last well into the next century (or beyond) if you avoid unnecessary handling. We invite you to visit our store. Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. A COA should be specific to one particular specimen, with a photo of the exact item on it. At Pioneer Fossils, our fossils and minerals come with a COA, and each have a photo of the exact item you just purchased. This assures that the COA can never be transferred to a different specimen.******************************************************************************************************************************************IMPORTANT: If you are not satisfied with your order, please contact us, and let us make it right, before giving any feedback.
