Description: Stanley Long Watercolor Painting Western Cowboy Horses California Landscape Art Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage watercolor painting by the listed artist, Stanley M. Long. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This unframed painting was done on paper which is mounted on masonite. The piece depicts a cowboy with some horses atop a grass-covered hill; there is a farm in the background. This piece measures approximately 12 3/4 inches by 19 1/2 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 5.2 ounces. This would be a good addition to a collection of vintage fine art. Identification This painting is by the listed American artist, Stanley M. Long (1892-1972). It is vintage, but the exact age is not known. It is from the estate of a northern California art collector. Per askART, Long was born in Oakland, California. He grew up on a ranch in Napa, where he worked on breaking wild horses; horses would become an important theme in his work. Beginning at the age of fifteen, he studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. Long was awarded a scholarship at the Academie Julian in Paris, France, where he received further art instruction. He served in the camouflage corps during both World War I and World War II. He was an art teacher at Mission High School and Polytechnic High School (both in San Francisco) for seventeen years. His work was featured in Sunset Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. Long was a member of Society of Western Artists, the Napa Valley Art Association, and the Peninsula Art Association. He exhibited at St. Mary's College in 1959, at the De Young Museum in 1960, and at the Oakland Museum in 1960. He passed away in San Carlos, California in 1972. Long's work resides in the Shasta City Museum in Shasta, California, at Prudential Life Insurance Company in New Jersey, and at the Grand Central Art Gallery in New York City. Condition This unframed painting looks good overall, as shown. The light areas have a yellowish cast, but it is difficult to discern what is original versus what is later toning. There are a couple of small and minor soiling areas (notably to the upper right corner and to the lower left corner), but these do not detract overall. As noted above, this was painted on paper and it was affixed to masonite at some point. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying.
