Le Duc de Choiseul Colonel général des Suisses et Grisons, Ministre de la Guerre et de la Marine, Par le S. Bellin Ingénieur de la Marine et du Depost M.DCCLXIII" Very large antique copper engraved sea chart of Saint Pierre island, by Jacques-Nicolas BELLIN (1703-1772). In upper left side, an inset of St Pierre-et-Miquelon and a part of Newfounland.Jacques Cartier named the island Saint Pierre during his visit in June 1536. Saint Pierre is the patron saint of fishermen. The island Saint Pierre, unlike its neighbor Miquelon, from which it is separated by a channel of about 5 km wide enjoys a relatively protected natural port. This configuration made Saint-Pierre one of the first fishing ports in the Newfoundland, for the cod fishery. Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) worked as the Depot de la Marine as hydrographic engineer. He is one of the most important mapmakers of the 18th century. In 1741, he became the first Ingenieur de la Marine et des Depots des cartes et plans de la Marine and became official Hydrographer of the French King. During his work as official Hydrographer, the Depot de la Marine was the most active center for the production of sea charts and maps, with a large atlas folio of sea-charts of France, the Neptune François. He also produced some sea atlases of the world, as "the Atlas maritime and the hydrographie Française".Jean-Baptiste Fortin (1740-1817) was a French geographer, cartographer, and manufacturer of scientific instruments. Director of maritime maps, he adopted the spherical projection of maps. He developed a planisphere representing the universe with the solar system.
