Description: Russian Medal in Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the KGB The medal is in brass and lacquer; measures 35 mm wide. Its obverse shows a bas-relief portrait of Felix Dzerzhinsky, the founder of the Soviet Cheka Secret Police (VChK which later became GPU and KGB) and one of the prime architects of the Red Terror. The inscription under the portrait is “VChK – KGB 80 Years”. The raised inscription on the reverse reads “Honor (and) Conscience of the Soviet People”. The medal is in excellent condition. The details and lacquer finish on obverse are practically pristine. The reverse shows minor amount of tarnish that adds character, not detractive. This medal is one of the so-called “alternative” awards issued by the Communist-run Congress of People’s Deputies of the USSR - legislative body of the Soviet Union that continued to operate for years after the Soviet Union's collapse! The “Permanent Presidium” elected Sazhi Umalatova as its chairwoman, and the medals issued by this organization were consequently called “Umalatovskie” or Umalatov’s medals. Naturally, these medals were never approved by the President of Russia and therefore never became a part of the official award system of modern Russia. Nevertheless, this curious piece can make a GREAT addition to any KGB or Soviet medal collection! FREE SHIPPING (USPS 1st cl. Mail) WITHIN USA ONLY! We WILL NOT ship our eBay items outside USA.
