Description: This unusual metal tray measures 91/4 by 5 inches and is only raised about 1/2 inch from the surface. The interior is stippled, and the inch sized border has a very complex repousee design. Amid feathery shapes and sections of cross hatched designs, are tucked buildings, some with turrets and towers, and men and women with tall round basket-like containers, some being pulled on small wheeled carts. In the parts of the design with the 2 baskets on the ground, a man has one hand behind his back holding the lip of one container, and one hand reaching out into the abstract design. My best guess is that he's picking fruit from a tree (?!) There are no identifying marks on the piece, and I found nothing like it online. I think that it's silverplate. From the style of the design, the building and clothing of the figures, I think that it's as old as the 19th century at least, and probably European in origin - but these are guesses. The corners are all a bit blunted and bent, and there's wear on some of the raised areas of the designs.
