Description: Art Farmer Something You Got FACTORY SEALED LP Format: Sealed Album Country: U.S.A. Record Company & Release Number: CTI Records: CTI 7080 Original release date: 1977 Bar Code: NONE Condition of the cover: MINT Condition of this sealed album: Sealed - Assumed Mint My inventory number: 205070 Shipping Weight: 1 pounds, 2 ounces Notes: This Sealed Album came from a record store in Allentown, Pennsylvania called "Phantasmagoria" which went out of business in 1978. I purchased most of their unsold inventory several years later when I owned "Music Madness" - a new & used record store in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania. Since this Sealed Album was part of Phantasmagoria's inventory when they closed in 1978, it cannot be any newer than a 1978 pressing. Being a Sealed Album, I cannot tell specifically what pressing it is prior to 1978. In some cases, hype stickers might help to determine if it is a first pressing, but I cannot be any more specific. Phantasmagoria used round colored stickers to indicate the price of their inventory. They had a sign on the wall with the color sticker combinations for the customers to use so they knew the price of what they were purchasing. Some of the Sealed Albums still have these stickers on them, and in some rare cases, the stickers are written on. Some of the Sealed Albums have prices on them. This is the price you would have paid for this Sealed Album in 1978 if you had bought it at Phantasmagoria. If this Sealed Album has a price on it, please don't confuse the price with the current value for this Sealed Album. - - - Please contact me if you have any difficulty viewing the photos. The relaxed pace of the set, with its reliance on easy jazz-funk (the title track) and extended funky workouts with stunning hard bop charts by Matthews on "Flute Song," makes for one of the most provocative looks at groove jazz in the CTI label's history. Farmer and Lateef were able to walk the line of sophisticated jazz and bumping funky soul with relative ease. Matthews' charts are breezy, and they rely on rhythm to form not only the backbone for the soloists but to fill up the middle space as well. Guitarist Hiram Bullock walks a wonderful line here between hard swinging airy extrapolations of jazz chord voicings and lean rhythmic R&B. His solo on "Flute Song" is one of his best on record. Likewise, the reading of Chick Corea's "Spain," which references "Concierto de Aranjuez" and features a gorgeous tenor break by Lateef, is a steamy Latin carnival read of the tune with bass-drenched overdrive. "Saudade" is the epitome of soul-jazz for a big band; its groove is loose, loping, and in the pocket rhythmically and Farmer and Lateef blow the melody all over the front, checking in with each other on the solos and turning the groove back on itself. This is a certain addition to any Farmer shelf. There is only one problem: the title is not available on CD in the U.S., but only as an expensive Japanese import. But it's worth whatever you pay for it. Art Farmer biography by Scott Yanow Largely overlooked during his formative years, Art Farmer's consistently inventive playing was more greatly appreciated as he continued to develop. Along with Clark Terry, Farmer helped to popularize the flügelhorn among brass players. His lyricism gave his bop-oriented style its own personality. Farmer studied piano, violin, and tuba before settling on trumpet. He worked in Los Angeles from 1945 on, performing regularly on Central Avenue and spending time in the bands of Johnny Otis, Jay McShann, Roy Porter, Benny Carter, and Gerald Wilson among others; some of the groups also included his twin brother, bassist Addison Farmer (1928-1963). After playing with Wardell Gray (1951-1952) and touring Europe with Lionel Hampton's big band (1953), Farmer moved to New York and worked with Gigi Gryce (1954-1956), Horace Silver's Quintet (1956-1958), and the Gerry Mulligan Quartet (1958-1959). Farmer, who made many recordings in the latter half of the '50s (including with Quincy Jones and George Russell and on some jam-session dates for Prestige) co-led the Jazztet with Benny Golson (1959-1962) and then had a group with Jim Hall (1962-1964). He moved to Vienna in 1968 where he joined the Austrian Radio Orchestra, worked with the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band and toured with his own units. Starting in the '80s, Farmer visited the U.S. more often and remained greatly in demand up until his death on October 4, 1999. Farmer recorded many sessions as a leader throughout the years for Prestige, Contemporary, United Artists, Argo, Mercury, Atlantic, Columbia, CTI, Soul Note, Optimism, Concord, Enja, and Sweet Basil.
