Description: Samuel Miller 1852 Letters to Sons in College PRINCETON history Letters from a Father to his Sons in College by Samuel Miller, D.D. Published in Philadelphia, PA by the Presbyterian Board of Publication in 1852. Hardcover, decorated in gilt. 240 pages. Condition is very nice., The cover has minor scuffing on the spine, and otherwise looks clean. The original owner, John Thompson, wrote his name in ink three times twice on the inside cover and facing page, along with the dates "Nov. 6, 1862" and "1871." He also wrote his name on the title page, along with the somewhat mysterious notations "Sarnia" and "No. 1401." There are also occasional notations in pencil scattered throughout the book. Still, apart from some age-appropriate toning at the margins, the text is in remarkably good condition. See photos! Samuel Miller, D.D. (1769-1850) was a Professor at the Princeton Theological Seminary. He put five sons through Princeton University, then known as The College of New Jersey. These letters, which Miller claimed were revised from letters he actually sent to his sons, were originally published in 1843. The 1852 edition was published posthumously, nine years later. Each of Miller's letters addresses a different topic or set of topics. The subjects covered include: obedience to the laws, manners, morals, religion, rebellions (he calls student protests "abhorrent"), health, temperance, formation and value of character, patriotism, particular studies, general reading, attention and diligence, associations and friendships, literary societies, dress, care of the student's room, expenses, alma mater, parents, and vacations. Throughout his life, Miller was a vigorous participant in many of the controversies that took place within the Presbyterian Church, including that which resulted in the division of the church into new and old schools. He was considered an authority on many of the issues that faced Christians, especially Presbyterians, of his time. His other publications included A Brief Retrospect of the Eighteenth Century (1803, 1805), Memoir of the Reverend John Rogers (1813), Letters on Unitarianism (1821), An Essay on the Office of the Ruling Elder (1831), The Primitive and Apostolical Order of the Church of Christ Vindicated (1840), and Thoughts on Public Prayer (1849). Hard to believe, but next month is back-to-school time for children in college! This is the perfect gift for offspring in need of advice, especially if they attend Princeton. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
