We are very excited about the introduction of the Bolt kayak, because it is such a great match for our sail kit and such a great value! Portable: The sail kit folds to the size of a set of golf clubs and weighs about 42 lbs (46 lbs with the rigid pontoons). We offer an optional carry bag that is 1' x 1' x 4' and holds every part of the sail kit. It is sturdy and has handles and a shoulder strap. See picture of carry bag. Fast Set Up: After you have done it a few times, set up takes about 20 minutes. Most important, after you put the sail onto the spars the first time, you never have to do that again. The sail stays on the spars and you fold them up with the sail mounted on them. Easy-to-follow set-up instructions with lots of pictures included, and a phone number and email for technical support. How-to-sail instructions also included. Mounting works entirely with existing fittings on the boat. You do not have to modify the boat in any way. The tracking fin underneath the kayak is not used when sailing, making it easier to land and launch from a beach or ramp. Fully Capable Sailboat: With the addition of this sail kit to your kayak, you will have a fully-capable sailboat, meaning a sailboat that can sail across the wind, go downwind, and tack into the wind. It has steering (dual ruddering oars -- you use the right one or the left one at any given moment, usually the one on the same side as the sail will feel most comfortable.) And it has leeboards, which are those fins you see on the sides about 3 feet in back of the mast. Leeboards have been used for centuries on shallow-draft sailboats to allow them to sail across the wind and tack into the wind without having a keel or centerboard. We have 2 styles of leeboards (black and white). This listing includes the black ones. Everything needed for the sailing conversion of your kayak is included: Sail, mast, spars, ropes, straps, instructions, front frame, rear frame, 2 steering oars and oarpins, 2 black leeboards and 2 leeboard mounts. Not included: Kayak, wind, water and lifejackets. Straps On: The sail kit straps onto your kayak with straps we provide. It has been fully tested on this kayak. It will not damage your kayak. We recently took one to the Bahamas and had a ball sailing it in the calm waters and brisk winds there. Options: We are offering this sail kit in a number of variations. Notice how the price changes depending on the combination of options you select. Sail size. We offer a 45 SF sail as the base configuration or the 22% larger 55 SF sail. The 55 SF sail option also includes a taller and stronger mast and a spar extension, both of which are needed for the bigger sail. Why would you want a bigger sail? If the wind is strong (say over 12 mph wind speed) you really don't need a bigger sail, though it doesn't hurt to have it provided the winds are not crazy strong. But when the winds are weak or moderate, a larger sail helps you go faster and so your are glad to have it. The 45 SF sail is about 9 feet tall. The 55 SF sail is about 11 1/2 feet tall. (Height of sail itself, from bottom edge of cloth to top corner). the price difference is $159, and that covers the upgrade to the bigger sail, the substitution of the taller/stronger mast and the addition of the spar extension.Pontoon type. We offer inflatable pontoons or rigid hollow plastic pontoons. The performance of the two pontoon types is equal in low and moderate winds. However, when the winds get strong (over 12 mph) the rigid pontoon performs better (less drag). They are equal in providing stability, but the rigid one will let you go faster. The price difference is $100. The inflatable pontoons are from Hobie and are shown on most of the pictures above. The rigid ones are from Spring Creek (see pic of pontoon by itself).Carry bag or not.
