Presenting a genuine & Rare Historic Antique 1871 Cabinet Card Photo of the most colorful adventurous, flamboyant & eccentric Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich Romanov of Russia (1850 St Petersburg-1908 Paris), taken in New York City by the legendary Matthew Brady. When it came to Royalty, Brady was quite enthusiastic! Marked on back as a carte-de-visite, this photo pre-dates the term Cabinet-Photo. It is an early classic. Son of Tsar Alexander II & Brother of Tsar Alexander III, Grand Duke Alexis, although reared for a Naval career was somewhat of a bohemian who upset his family by falling in love with a “commoner” woman & fathered a child. In 1871 Grand Duke Alexis headed a delegation from the Russian Navy which first visited Denmark and England before arriving in the United States. He was fascinated by New York, where among other things, he sought out Matthew Brady to photograph him in several poses, front, side, sitting, standing. In Washington D.C, he was received by President Ulysses S, Grant, his wife, Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, Attorney General Ackerman and various representatives of government & military. On the West Coast, Alexis went on extensive Buffalo hunts involving Buffalo Bill Cody and General George Armstrong Custer. In the New Orleans, he enjoyed the risque Burlesque Shows. After his brother Alexander became Czar, Alexis was appointed Commander and Chief of the Navy, which in the long run, proved to be a mistake. We quote from Wiki “The Grand Duke's reputation as a corrupt, spendthrift dilettante, who lavished fortunes on "ladies of no reputation", had worsened throughout the years. Having purchased a magnificent mansion in Paris, he built a new wing of his St Petersburg palace for his mistress, ballerina Elizabeth Balletta! According to Kaiser Wilhelm II, no ship in the Russian Fleet could be purchased "without the Grand Duke Alexis, the Commander-in- Chief of the Fleet, pocketing a quarter of a million roubles". In 1903, thirty million roubles, half of the budget of the Russian navy had disappeared without a single new ship being launched! Grand Duke was suspected of being involved in the misappropriation”. To say the least, Grand Duke Alexis led an extremely colorful life. We suggest you read the Wikipedia article it is quite entertaining.
