Description: A modulator valve (also known as a modulator) is a small vacuum-controlled valve that mounts to the transmission case of an automatic transmission, and is used to control the flow of transmission fluid into the transmission. Modulators were once used to control shifting in automatic transmissions. However, newer transmissions no longer require modulators, and they are not commonly found on manual transmissions. They are also rarely found on vehicles built before 1996. There are several symptoms of a bad modulator including harsh, early or late shifts, rough idling or a whistling noise from air leaking through the diaphragm. A noticeable effect is white smoke coming from the exhaust.
