Description: This lithograph is based upon a collage by the artist titled "Falling Star", also created in 1979. It has been said that Bearden may have been influenced by John Donne's poem "To Catch a Falling Star", the theme of which deals with the impossibility of finding "a woman true and fair." This work depicts an African American woman standing right of center in profile within an interior, the walls of the room painted chartreuse, ochre, and terra cotta. The woman wears a long skirt in a brightly patterned abstract print and contrasting print long sleeved blouse. She holds a cup in her proper right hand and is lifting it to her lips. A table with an Early American glass lamp sits behind her, a full moon shining brightly through the window above. A basket filled with brightly colored laundry sits on the floor in front of her Through a doorway just left of center, a floral cloth is seen draped over a table and the corner of a black table is seen just below an open window. Through the window, a bright yellow falling star is seen in the blue sky, leaving sparkling trails as it falls. 'For Roy' Inscribed to Roy DeCarava (1919 - 2009) A very well recognized African American painter and photographer known for his early work chronicling the lives of African Americans and jazz artists in Harlem and as a founder of black and white photography. The UnKnown spotting in lower left quadrant, possibly drips of paint or pigment from the artist's studio, per Maureen Tursey, Mojo Portfolio speculates this particular print may have been in the artist's studio when it was dedicated and given to RoyDeCarava and that the artist could have dropped paint or pigment on it at that time.- Condition: - Water damage lower center margin, lower left margin, upper center margin and upper right corner - Creases on right side, approximately 5"" apart, possibly from having been rolled; creases extend approximately half the width of the sheet - Handling creases - Smudges in borders Shipping: The item is sold as described and as-is.
