I have just finished the restoration and total reconstruction of a 2,000 year old Roman scorpio bolt that were primarily used as a siege weapon. These bolts are well known to have been used in countless sieges by the Romans, but they have also been mentioned by ancient authors as being used in land battles as well from time to time Buying and collecting ancient Roman artifacts of any type is quite exciting and fun but collecting Roman weapons and or weapon types is the "creme de la creme". The Roman legions were the masters of the known world in one way or another for many centuries and collecting and owning anything that they used and held in their own hands is beyond cool.There are many people and or businesses that restore antique guns and antique swords like Dave that are both usually a few hundred years old. However, the restoring and reconstruction a 2,000-year-old Roman weapon like Dave does is another animal entirely. Most modern gun and sword restorers tend to try and make the item look new again or at least make it look like it did when it came off the factory floor. However, it would not look aesthetically pleasing to the eye to do this to a 2,000-year-old scorpio bolt. One does not want to start filing down, drilling out, sanding off or used acid washes on anything this old. So, the only way to make a restoration this old look aesthetically pleasing is to make the entire thing look ancient itself so that it matches the overall feel of the ancient bolt itself. This means that the entire thing has to be handmade like the originals were first of all. It also has to look ancient. You do not want a beautiful brand-new looking wooden arrow rod or dowel as your base for this. It cannot look clean. It absolutely has to look old and weathered and used itself in order to pull off a good look. This is the total opposite direction of what a gun or sword restorer would do. The wooden dowel or rod has to look weathered as well just as the scorpio bolt head does already. One way to do this is by looking for antique reclaimed wood from old homes. The amount of work and fine detail done on the arrow shaft itself to complement the scorpio bolt is pretty much all inclusive and goes from end to end. To have such a nice piece and then not be able to display it smartly is something that I am also working on.
