Firstly, the collar height, or “crown” as it’s often referred to, can directly relate to the style of banjo you’re playing. High crown heads (up to 1/2 inches in height) are mostly for flat-head and open-back banjos; medium crowns (up to 7/16 inches) work well on both flat-head and archtop banjos; and low crowns (up to 3/8 inches) are most commonly used on archtop banjos. Using the incorrect height can affect your instrument's playability by obstructing the path of the strings if the hoop is sitting too tall, and may not allow you to adjust the tension on your head tight enough due to the type of hardware on your banjo.
