A native to Northeast Madagascar. Some familiar names include Fan Plantain, Traveler Banana, Travellers Tree, Travellers Palm, or East-West palm. Not a true palm but a member of a monocotyledonous family, Strelitziaceae. It is closely related to the southern African genus Strelitzia and the South American genus Phenakospermum. It has been given the name "traveller's palm" because the sheaths of the stems hold rainwater, which could be used as drinking water for needy travelers. I wouldn't drink it. It can grow to 50 feet tall and 25 feet wide. The leaves are paddle-shaped, 5-10' long by 2-3' wide. The flowers are very similar to Birds of Paradise flowers (Strelitzia nicolai), being white flowers. It requires consistently moist soil for best results. I put mine on a timer to ensure moistness. Full sun and well-drained soil are a must. Zones 9-11 Germination Soak the seeds before sowing for about 24 – 48 hours in warm water. Cover up with some aluminum foil to conserve the warmth. Place seeds in a plastic bag fill with moist sphagnum moss. Place bag on top of the water heater or a place with temperatures around 80-90F. Flip the bag over to avoid drying out one side. Germination occurs within 15-30 days.
