Description: This very unusual colorful needlework picture is was made from a pattern featured in a vintage book called "Designs from Greek Embroideries, Volume 1" by Amalia Megapanou (it's listed on eBay, if you want to have a look), published in 1981. This exquisitely detailed chicken sampler is featured on the front cover of the book. The introduction to the book reads: "...The patterns presented in this book are modern applications of traditional motifs; they form part of a work I [Amelia Megapanou] started some time ago and still continue. My purpose is to collect as many examples as possible, of designs based on the technique of counted stitch, from almost every part of Greece... ...The essence of my work... is dedicated exclusively to the unknown Greek Woman, who stitched her private hopes and sorrows with admirable skill and grace on articles of clothing and house decoration, without ever imagining the wealth of her bequest to us." The embroidery canvas features an ornate blue-gray chicken with purple, orange, citron, and black embroidered "feathers" and a bright red crown and beak. The chicken is surrounded by green, purple, gold, orange, peach, merlot, lavender, beige and yellow floral and leaf motif designs. The canvas is matted with a celery green wide matte and an inner avocado green border that perfectly complement the canvas. It is framed with a narrow, solid wood traditional-style frame that is stained a cherrywood color and includes a stamp from the shop in Ohio that originally framed the piece. I don't know the exact age of the embroidery, but was very likely created in the early 1980's based on the color and style of the framing. The framed picture measures about 16 5/8 inches in width and is approximately 16 3/4 inches in height - almost but not quite square and a great medium size. I don't believe many pieces were actually created from the patterns in this book and have never seen another. This one is really special. Very Good Vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffs from wear, consistent with age. There is a slight age-related separation in the lower corners of the frame (see photos). The matte is in great condition with no fading, stains, spots or holes. The needlework picture also in wonderful condition - no fading, stains, loose threads, unraveling, or holes. Glass is in good condition with no cracks or chips. There are some small tears in the picture's paper backing - does not affect the quality or appearance of the piece. The hanging wire is well-secured and very substantial, and there should be no problems in terms of providing support for the picture when it hangs. See photos for more details.
