Description: I recently purchased a collection of fairly rare Civil War, Mexican War & Revolutionary War related books belonging to a man (now deceased) who metal detected in the Virginia and Maryland area in the 1980's, and also in NM, AZ and Texas after moving here to New Mexico in the 1990's. Very rare set-Volume 1 & 2-The History, Civil, Political & Military of the Southern Rebellion-from its incipient stages to its close. Comprehending also, all important state papers, Ordinances of Secession, Proclamations, Proceedings of Congress, official reports of commanders, etc. Author is Orville J. Victor. Published by James D Torrey-13 Spruce St-New York. The dates in the front are 1861, but it looks to me like Volume 1 goes to about the end of 1861, and Volume 2 seems to go thru early 1863. I'm not sure if additional Volumes were published after these or not. Covers are embossed with a embossed gold eagle image. Condition: Both Volumes have the original covers and binding, decent condition for their age. The covers, spines and lettering show much fading and wear, but no major damage other than very worn edges and corners. The hinges on inside of covers are good-no separating. The contents and text are very good, no markings, no loose pages, rips or tears that I could see. I didn't check every page. The pages have the typical foxing and discoloration one would expect of a book printed in the 1860's. Volume 1 is 531 pages, Volume 2 is 537 pages. Measures approx. 7" x 10 1/4". Each volume has the original owners name signed on the 1st page inside front cover, and Williamstown Vermont, 1867 (see photos). Not sure what his name is.
