Description: Rare c.1890 Antique Children's Book THE HOUSE WE LIVE INPicture-Puzzle Toy Book Published by F. Warne & Co. (of Beatrix Potter fame) This rare puzzle book has been cut/worked, and may be incomplete. [ FEATURES AND DETAILS... ] Provenance: This book was owned by Lydia H. Tatum of Colora, Maryland. It is from a collection of her childhood books--all between 1897 and 1901--that came up for auction with the estate of Jane Canby Balderston Dye, whose relationship to Lydia I have not been able to ascertain, but I believe she was her godmother. A couple of the books in the collection are inscribed as gifts to Lydia, though the rest of the books have no name appearing in them at all. Please see the final photo ... which is included for reference only. (The item is not being sold with this book.) It shows a letter (from the same estate) written by Jane to Lydia in 1915--about 15-20 years after the copyright date on most of these books so, presumably, Lydia was nearly grown up by then. As for Jane, she was also of Colora, Maryland, and herself a direct blood descendant of Betsy Ross (of flag fame). She who was married to Daniel Sheets Dye. Together, Jane and Daniel were missionaries in China with West China Union University until 1949, when they were forced to leave due to the political climate. Warne painting and puzzle books have been fully painted/cut as they were intended to be.This rare puzzle book has been cut/worked, and may be incomplete.Overall bookseller condition: FAIR The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues.
