President Millard Fillmore Free Franked Envelope [Autograph]

Description: Thirteenth President of the United States Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) signed this envelope, using his franking privileges, that was mailed to Amory Holbrook, Esq. of Oregon City in the Oregon Territory. There is a circular postal cancellation stamp for Washington D.C. with a July 27 date. The verso has a pencil note which reads "July 26, 1852" and a largely intact red wax seal. Fillmore became President upon Zachary Taylor's sudden death in 1850. He served until 1853 when he was succeeded by Franklin Pierce. He is remembered for his role in passing the Compromise of 1850, which led to a brief truce in the battle over the expansion of slavery in the United States. Amory Holbrook (1820–1866) was the first U.S. Attorney for the Oregon Territory and later served as mayor of Oregon City. 3" x 5 1/4". Condition: The top flap of the envelope has been cut away, there is a pea-sized area of paper loss at upper margin, light overall soil. Generally good condition with a strong signature.
